About EURALEX

EURALEX is the European Association for Lexicography: an international association which was founded in 1983, with the aims of furthering all aspects of the broad field of lexicography, and of promoting the exchange of ideas and information. It is committed to the development of lexicography in all European languages (as well as other non-European languages). EURALEX's interests include dictionaries of all kinds (monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual, general and specialist, in book and in machine-readable form); metalexicography, the theory of lexicography, and the history of lexicography; the praxis of dictionary-making; dictionary use; terminology and terminography; corpus lexicography; computational lexicography and dictionaries for natural language processing; and lexicology in general.

The EURALEX membership is worldwide, not just European. It includes career lexicographers, metalexicographers, students of lexicography and researchers into dictionaries, publishers, terminographers, researchers in natural language processing, teachers, and people who `just like dictionaries'. EURALEX is governed by a board of 10 members, who are elected every two years.

EURALEX holds biennial congresses, attended by several hundred people, where refereed papers are presented on a large variety of topics relevant to its members' interests: the congress proceedings are published. EURALEX also gives support to smaller meetings, symposia, and workshops on particular lexicographical topics: recent examples include workshops on dictionary use and a symposium on phraseology.

EURALEX sponsors IJL, The International Journal of Lexicography, a quarterly journal which covers the whole range of members' interests. IJL is published by Oxford University Press, and membership of EURALEX automatically includes a subscription to IJL. News about EURALEX activities and members is published in a quarterly newsletter, which appears as an insert in IJL and also on the EURALEX web site.

EURALEX has sisterly relations with other lexicographical organizations: DSNA Dictionary Society of North America (please see also the Cunningham Memorial Library (Rare Books and special collections) at the Indiana State University Library), AFRILEX African Association for Lexicography, ASIALEX Asian Association for Lexicography, and AUSTRALEX Australasian Association for Lexicography.

About EURALEX membership

By joining EURALEX, you will receive IJL on publication each quarter; information about congresses and other events; and access to other EURALEX information. Members are entitled to attend all EURALEX meetings, and to vote at the Biennial General Meeting, which is held in conjunction with the International Congress. Members are given preferential rates at EURALEX congresses and events.

There are several categories of membership. The EURALEX Membership Year runs from January 1st to December 31st. Those wishing to become Members of the Association must pay the required annual subscription in advance for the particular year in which they join. Existing Members must renew their subscription each year by January 1st. The list of members is published annually in IJL.

Personal Members

Personal Membership is available to individuals who are interested in lexicography. There is a reduced subscription rate for new individual members. Please check the annual subscription rates at OUP's page of the International Journal of Lexicography.

Institutional Members

Institutional Membership is available to institutions, for example publishing houses, libraries, universities, academies, training centres, and other organizations. This type of membership allows institutions to nominate two Representatives who each qualify for the same rights and benefits of Membership as are enjoyed by personal Members of the Association. Please check the annual subscription rates at OUP's page of the International Journal of Lexicography.

Honorary Members

Those who are considered by the Executive Board of the Association, upon the proposal of a Member, to have made an outstanding contribution to lexicography may be invited by the Executive Board to become Honorary Members, provided that any such invitation is endorsed by the Biennial General Meeting of the Association. Honorary Members are exempted from paying annual subscriptions.

IFF Members

IFF Membership is granted to institutions sponsored by the International Friendship Fund (see below). Any number of individuals affiliated to such institutions can on request be included in the membership list; they will enjoy full membership rights, except that the institution will receive only one copy of any free publication. Such publications will be addressed to one named person who will act as the institution's contact with EURALEX.

International Friendship Fund

EURALEX has established an International Friendship Fund (IFF) to assist colleagues who are unable to pay their membership subscriptions because of currency convertibility difficulties (see IFF members above). At the time of joining, and of renewing their subscriptions, Members are invited to contribute to the IFF by paying (e.g. 10 per cent) more than the fee due. Any surcharge paid will go to the IFF. Applications from those wishing to benefit from the IFF should be made to the EURALEX Secretary-Treasurer at the address below. IFF support is limited to institutions in countries that are not part of the European Union.

Sponsorship

Instead of contributing to the anonymous IFF, some members have chosen to pay the full subscriptions of named colleagues with currency difficulties. If you want to sponsor the membership of one or more colleagues, please indicate this on the Application Form, or just notify the EURALEX Secretary-Treasurer of the name(s) and address(es) of those colleagues who will in future benefit from your sponsorship. The Secretary-Treasurer will ensure that invoices are sent to you and not to the beneficiary.

How to join EURALEX

Please fill in the relevant form from OUP's page of the International Journal of Lexicography (select the appropriate type of membership and the currency).
