Colin Smith died

Professor Colin Smith died on 16 February 1997, after a short illness. This is a very sad loss to the world of scholarship, Spanish letters, and English-Spanish bilingual lexicography.

As regards his major contribution to lexicography, after co-authoring a title for Langenscheidt in the 60s, Colin produced his first English-Spanish-English dictionary with Collins in 1971. It quickly established itself as the standard work in the field, as well as originating the methodology which was to be further developed by the Collins-Robert team. The dictionary was innovative in the clarity of the entries; the breadth of language it covered, particularly slang; in taking account of the neologisms generated in Spain by the momentous social and cultural changes taking place in the latter years of the Franco régime; and in its comprehensive coverage of Latin American usage.

It is extremely hard to condense Colin's many other remarkable achievements into a couple of sentences, but undoubtedly it gave him great personal satisfaction to have been the joint author of the standard work "The Place-Names of Roman Britain"; to have discovered a new moth (entomology was a great passion, and with typical modesty he did not name his discovery after himself); to have won prizes, in his retirement, for his translations of Galician authors; and to have had the singular distinction of being appointed Commander of the Order of Isabel la Católica. His work in so many fields will continue to be an inspiration, and he will be missed by those who were fortunate enough to have experienced his enthusiasm and infectious good humour.

EAGLES

The Expert Advisory Group on Language Engineering Standards (EAGLES) is pleased to announce that results of the first phase of the EAGLES initiative are now available on the EAGLES WWW server at http://www.ilc.pi.cnr.it/EAGLES/home.html

EAGLES (LRE-61-100) is an initiative of the European Commission which aims to accelerate the provision of standards for:

Numerous well-known companies, research centres, universities and professional bodies across the European Union are collaborating under the aegis of EC DGXIII to produce the EAGLES Guidelines which set out recommendations for de facto standards and for good practice in the above areas of language engineering. Some 200 individuals are involved.

The EAGLES initiative is coordinated by Consorzio Pisa Ricerche, Pisa, Italy which also manages the EAGLES WWW server. The work towards guidelines was carried out by five Working Groups on: Text Corpora; Grammar Formalisms; Evaluation; Computational Lexicons; and Spoken Language.

As we are still in the process of converting documents for mounting on the Web, certain links may be inactive. At present, we beg the reader's indulgence: our primary concern is to make material available as early as possible, even if in draft or unrevised form. As revised and more densely linked material becomes available, announcements will be made via the home page, and status information will be updated. Thus, it is appropriate to re-visit the EAGLES Web site at regular intervals. Indeed, a further major concern is to receive feedback from the wider community on the contents of the EAGLES Guidelines: thus the reader is actively encouraged to contribute through constructive criticism. Details of the feedback mechanism are also available from the home page.

The EAGLES editorial board and coordinator would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people who have been involved in this enterprise. We trust that the material offered here, being the result of the best efforts of many people, will prove of use in providing guidelines for best practice in our field.

Lexicographical Work in Progress

A new etymological dictionary of English

For some years now, Anatoly Liberman (Minnesota, German Department) and Larry Mitchell (Texas A & M University, Department of English) have been working towards a new etymological dictionary of English. The first fruits of this project will be An Encyclopedic Dictionary of English Etymology: A Bibliography (two volumes), which should be available by 1998-99. This bibliography will contain information on the history of about 12,000 words, the first volume being the bibliography proper, and the second a word list keyed against the titles featured in volume 1. There will also be a third volume of sample entries for 50 words. One of these entries, for STRUMPET, is now available at http://engserve.tamu.edu/pers/fac/mitchell/strumpet.html.

As the editors move into the monumental task of compiling entries, they would appreciate any feedback readers can offer about any aspect of the entry (format, readability, accuracy of information, comprehensiveness, etc.). Comments can be sent by e-mail to j-mitchell@tamu.edu or by ordinary mail to Larry Mitchell, Dept of English, Texas A & M University, College Station, TX 77843-4227, USA (tel. +1 409 845 3890) or Anatoly Liberman, Department of German, University of Minnesota, 205 Folwell Hall 9 Pleasant Street Minneapolis MN 55455-0124, USA (tel. +1 612 625 2080).
