Lexicom-Europe 2006 - Sixth Annual Lexicom International Workshop

Our sixth Lexicom was held from 5-9 June 2006 in Opatija, Croatia, hosted by the University of Rijeka and ably managed by members of the Faculty of Maritime Studies.  Once again, the focus was on dictionary-making: ‘learning how’ rather than ‘learning about’. The 40 or so participants – lexicographers, editors, managers, translators, linguists, computational linguists and computer scientists – represented a dozen countries and came from many different backgrounds: publishing houses, universities,  software houses, research establishments, government departments and international institutions.  A participant’s-eye-view is given at www.lexmasterclass.com, together with the full programme. The group photo is on www.pfri.hr/lexicom/.

Each seminar introduced and discussed a key topic, which was then further explored in practical exercises at the computer.  As well as the basics of practical lexicography, the programme covered corpus design and annotation, the extraction of information from corpus, and an introduction to frame semantics as a practical approach to corpus analysis.  Dictionary writing software was demo’d by Gilles-Maurice de Schrijver from TshwaneLex. Participants received complete documentation of all the seminars in a bound copy of the Course Notes.

The course was led by Sue Atkins, Adam Kilgarriff and Michael Rundell, of the Lexicography MasterClass Ltd. The Hotel Opatija, where the workshop was held, proved an excellent venue, offering fine vistas over the Adriatic coast, good local eating places and splendid coastal walks for the energetically inclined.

Lexicom-Asia 2006  will take place from December 11th-15th in Kowloon, Hong Kong, where our hosts will be the Language Centre, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (http://lc.ust.hk/~centre/lexi2006/).

Lexicom-Europe 2007. Plans for next year’s Workshop are well in hand, and should be in place by the time this announcement is published. Participation will be limited to 40.  Discounts will be available for full-time students and people whose national currencies make the course fee disproportionately expensive.  Details from http://www.lexmasterclass.com.

Success story for Urdang scholar

We are happy to report that Chinedu Uchechukwu, winner of the Euralex Urdang Award in 2002, has been nominated by his university, the Otto-Friedrich-University of Bamberg, Germany, to receive the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, or DAAD) prize for the most outstanding international student of the year, in academic achievement and social and cultural commitment. Earlier this year Chinedu gained his PhD ‘magna cum laude’ for his lexicographic work on German and Igbo. The DAAD award citation describes Chinedu as “a true ambassador for Nigeria and for African students in general at the Otto-Friedrich-University”. He will receive the €1000 prize at the University’s dies academicus on November 6, 2006, in the University Aula. Chinedu used his Urdang Award to establish a corpus model for the Igbo language, and his report on this project is at http://www.euralex.org/official/LUA_Uchechukwu.pdf
