Lexicom workshop 2006

Lexicom is an intensive 5-day workshop in lexicography and lexical computing, led by the Lexicography MasterClass (Sue Atkins, Adam Kilgarriff, Michael Rundell). It combines practical work and theoretical perspectives, to provide training in the making of corpus-based dictionaries and the software that supports this activity.  The European 2006 event will be the sixth in the series and will be held in early June in Opatija on the Croatian coast and there will also, for the first time, be an Asian event, in Hong Kong in December 2006; please visit http://www.lexmasterclass.com  for further details and registration.

Online corpora and linguistics

Report from the Symposium Corpora e linguistica in rete , held at the University of Turin on 30 September 2005. It was chaired by Euralex member Carla Marello and attended  by over 100 people from different E.U. countries. It hosted 15 communications and 7 posters. Among the speakers Euralex members Ulrich Heid and Manuel Barbera introduced linguistic and lexicographical aspects of the web and of the multilingual corpora available at www.corpora.unito.it, one of the few data sources freely accessible in the European panorama. The corpora in the site can be queried via the CQP system (Corpus Query Processor) of IMS Stuttgart, with Turinese improvements in on-line query procedures and in the design of search windows.

Case studies by invited speakers and by Turin PhD Students in Linguistic Engineering plus a final round-table have demonstrated the value of the tools for lexical research, in particular for the analysis of borrowings and collocations in contemporary Italian, French, English, German and Spanish. Printed proceedings will be available in Fall 2006. Info: carla.marello@unito.it
