This quarterly Newsletter is intended to include not only official
announcements but also news about EURALEX members, their
publications, projects, and (it is hoped) their opinions, and news
about other lexicographical organizations. Please try to support this
by sending newsletter contributions to Paul Bogaards at the above
address, or by email. The deadlines for winter (December), spring
(March), summer (June), and autumn (September) issues are
respectively 1 August, 25 October, 1 February, and 1 May annually.

2004 Laurence Urdang Award
Applications are invited for the Laurence Urdang Award (formerly the Verbatim Award), which is funded by Laurence Urdang and administered by EURALEX. Its purpose is to support unpaid lexicographical work of any type, including study. The amount available is GBP £1500 sterling, and an individual award may vary in size from GBP £250 to the full amount. Applications must be received by 30 September 2004. Results will be announced by early 2005, and awards will be presented as soon as possible after the notification of results.
Applications should take the form of:
- a letter specifying the amount applied for;
- a statement giving full details of the purpose to which the funds would be put, and an indication of expected tangible results (e.g. publications);
- a curriculum vitae including qualifications, details of previous lexicographical or related work, and publications;
- one professional or academic reference;
- details of funding received or applied for in relation to the project for which the Laurence Urdang Award is being sought.

The Selection Panel consists of the EURALEX President, and two past presidents. The Award is open to EURALEX members only, but applications will be accepted from people who have applied for EURALEX membership and are awaiting confirmation of this. Taiwan's first lexicography organization founded
Taiwan's first lexicography organization, Dictionary and Corpus Research Center, was officially founded on March 7, 2004, in Taipei. The formation of this Center, an interest group within the Taiwanese Association for Translation and Interpretation, was initiated at the Association's plenary meeting on December 20, 2003. Founding members include lexicographers, corpus linguists, and publishers. The Center aims to be an organization of lexicography theorists and practitioners, and the confluence of dictionary and corpus resources. Its short-term goals include making the educated public, general readers and researchers in Taiwan aware of what kinds of dictionaries and corpora are available,
advising them on dictionary purchases and use, and evaluating dictionaries and related reference books on the market. Its long-term goals include publishing newsletters, books, and academic journals, and hosting conferences. The newly established Center now holds quarterly meetings with keynote lectures. The current coordinator is Dr. Hugo T. Y. Tseng of the English Department of Soochow University, Taipei.

Two decades of Lexicographica Series Maior
It was exactly 20 years ago that I was editing the proceedings of the LEXeter '83 Conference (subsequently called 1st EURALEX Congress) for publication as Volume 1 in Lexicographica Series Maior. In 1988, when the series had grown to 20 volumes, I called it a 'basic training library', a characterisation which is even more appropriate today, as there are now over 114 volumes representing several text genres: conference papers (24 volumes), new and reprinted dictionaries (15 volumes), other collections (13 volumes), bibliographies (5 volumes), festschriften (1 volume) and 57 monographs, some based on research dissertations, covering topics such as dictionary criticism, dictionary history, dictionary use and computational lexicography.
