The EURALEX Newsletter

This quarterly Newsletter is intended to include not only official announcements but also news about EURALEX members, their publications, projects, and (it is hoped) their opinions, and news about other lexicographical organizations. Please try to support this by sending newsletter contributions to Rosamund Moon at the above address, or by email. The deadlines for winter (December), spring (March), summer (June), and autumn (September) issues are respectively 1 August, 25 October, 1 February, and 1 May annually.

Could all members please note that the deadlines for our newsletter have changed. This is because we now need to send the final newsletters for typesetting and printing approximately 6 weeks earlier than previously (7 weeks earlier in the case of the Spring newsletter).

EURALEX 2004 (anglais)

The 11th EURALEX International Congress will be held in Lorient, France, from the 6th to the 10th July, 2004. The Congess organizers are the Faculté de Lettres et Sciences Humaines of the Université de Bretagne Sud, Lorient.

The information at this location will be kept up to date.

The EURALEX Congresses bring together professional lexicographers, publishers, researchers, scholars, and others interested in dictionaries of all types. The programme will include plenary lectures, parallel sessions on the topics listed below, software demonstrations, pre-congress tutorials and specialized workshops, a book and software exhibition, and social events for participants and their guests.

Topics

Papers, posters, and software demonstrations are invited on all topics of lexicography, including, but not limited to, the following fields, which are the main focus of the congress:

1. Computational Lexicography and Lexicology.
2. The Dictionary-Making Process.
3. Reports on Lexicographical and Lexicological Projects.
4. Bilingual Lexicography.
5. Lexicography for Specialized Languages - Terminology and Terminography.
6. Historical and Scholarly Lexicography and Etymology.
7. Dictionary Use.
8. Phraseology and Collocation.
9. Lexicological Issues of Lexicographical Relevance.
10. Other topics.

The main topics are not meant to exclude any lexicographic topic. Papers, posters, and demonstrations that are relevant to the congress, but which do not fit into any of the categories 1-9, will be reviewed nonetheless and considered for presentation.

Papers
Individual presentations should be timed for 30 minutes, and will be followed by a 10-minute discussion period.

Short papers and project notes
There will be opportunities for short papers and project notes. These will be allowed 20 minutes with a 10-minute discussion period. There are no restrictions on language of presentations, but unfortunately it is not possible to offer interpretation.

Software demonstrations
We are particularly interested in well-prepared software demonstrations, presentations of electronic dictionaries, corpora, tools, etc. These demonstrations will be allowed a 20-minute time slot at the congress (they may possibly be presented twice). Technical facilities will be available.

Posters
A poster session is planned. Appropriate facilities will be provided on the Congress site.

SUBMISSIONS

Submissions may be one of the following types: Contributed papers, Software demonstrations, Posters. All submissions will be reviewed by two or three members of the referees panel. The programme will be selected by the programme committee. Submissions proposing software demonstrations should include a description of the functions, underlying approach and implementation of the software, possibly an indication of a URL, and hardware/software requirements.

Authors should send five hard copies before 30th October 2003. Email submission may be used in addition, but the hardcopy submission in five copies is mandatory.

Format
Contributed Papers: 6-8 pages, double-spaced;
Software Demonstrations: 4 pages, double-spaced;
Posters: 1-2 pages, double-spaced;

Front page:

Title of the paper/software demonstration/poster;
Name(s), affiliation(s) and address(es) of the author(s);
Abstract (10-15 lines);
In the top right corner: indication of the topic category. If your paper does not fit into any of the main categories, please use 10.

Authors whose submissions are accepted will receive a style guide for the preparation of the (electronic) final version of the paper to be published in the Proceedings immediately before the congress. Contributed papers will be allowed up to 10 pages: papers relating to Software Demonstrations c. 5 pages, in a separate section of the Proceedings.

Important Dates

30th October 2003: Deadline for receipt of preliminary versions of papers by congress organizers.
1st February 2004: Despatch of notifications of acceptance/rejection.
15th March 2004: Deadline for receipt of camera-ready papers for inclusion in the Proceedings.

Pre-EURALEX tutorials

Pre-EURALEX tutorials will be organized. Topics will be announced later.

Exhibitions

A book and software exhibition will be organized in the coffee break area of the Congress site. Walk-up-and-use software demonstrations (without presentation, not included in the Proceedings) may be given there; however, participants should bring their own transportable PCs or laptops as there will be no technical support.

Registration

Fees will be announced later. An early subscription bonus, as well as a reduction for EURALEX members, will be offered. A late fee will apply.

Accommodation

This will be organized directly by the Tourist Office of Lorient. Block reservations will be made in the centre of Lorient. The University is about 30 minutes on foot from the centre or 10 minutes by bus. Low budget accommodation will be provided as well. Information can be obtained from the Congress Organizers or from:

Les informations présentées sur ce site seront régulièrement mises à jour.

Le congrès EURALEX réunit lexicographes professionnels, éditeurs, chercheurs, universitaires, et toute personne intéressés par les dictionnaires de tous types. Le programme comprendra des conférences plénières, des sessions parallèles sur les thèmes énumérés ci-dessous, des démonstrations de logiciels, des ateliers d'avant-congrès, des ateliers spécialisés, une exposition de livres et de logiciels, et des activités de détente pour les participants et leurs invités.

Thèmes

Les communications, les communications affichées (posters) et les démonstrations de logiciels peuvent être proposés sur tous les aspects de la lexicographie et, entre autres, les thèmes suivants qui sont au centre du congrès :

1. Lexicographie et Lexicologie Computationnelle
2. Processus d'élaboration des dictionnaires
3. Rapports sur des projets lexicographiques et lexicologiques
4. Lexicographie Bilingue
5. Lexicographie pour Langues de Spécialité - Terminologie et Terminographie
6. Lexicographie historique et savante et Étymologie
7. Utilisation des dictionnaires
8. Phraséologie et Collocation
9. Questions lexicologiques ayant une pertinence lexicographique
10. Autres thèmes

Les thèmes directeurs n'excluent pas les autres thèmes lexicographiques : les articles, posters et démonstrations correspondant aux thèmes du congrès mais qui n'entrent pas dans les catégories 1-9 seront cependant examinés pour présentation éventuelle.

Communications
Les présentations individuelles ne dépasseront pas 20 minutes et seront suivies de 10 minutes de discussion.

Communications courtes et présentations rapides de projets
Il sera possible de faire de courtes communications et des présentations rapides de projets. Le temps imparti à chaque présentation sera de 20 minutes suivi de 10 minutes de discussion. Les communicants pourront faire leur présentation dans la langue de leur choix mais il n'est malheureusement pas prévu d'interprétation.

Démonstrations de logiciels
Toute démonstration bien préparée de logiciels ainsi que toute présentation de dictionnaires électroniques, de corpus, d'outils, etc. sera particulièrement bienvenue. Ces présentations disposeront d'un créneau de 20 minutes lors du congrès (il est possible de les faire deux fois). Il sera possible d'utiliser les moyens techniques de l'université.

Communications affichées
Une session de communications affichées est prévue. Les installations adéquates seront mises à disposition. Des panneaux seront disponibles.

SOUMISSION DES PROPOSITIONS

Les soumissions pourront concerner soit des communications orales, soit des démonstrations de logiciels, soit des posters. Chaque proposition sera examinée par deux ou trois membres du comité de lecture. Le programme sera établi par le comité de programmation. Les propositions de démonstrations de logiciels incluront une description des fonctions, l'approche sous-jacente et l'utilisation du logiciel, éventuellement une adresse internet et la configuration informatique nécessaire.

Il est demandé aux auteurs d'envoyer 5 copies papier de leur proposition avant le 30 octobre 2003. Il leur est possible de soumettre leur proposition par email mais la procédure papier en 5 exemplaires est obligatoire.

Communication orales : 6-8 pages, interligne double ;
Démonstrations de logiciels : 4 pages, interligne double ;
Communications affichées : 1-2 pages, interligne double ;

1ère page :

Titre de l'article/démonstration/de logiciel/affiche ;
Noms, université(s)/entreprise(s) et adresse(s) de l'auteur/des auteurs ;
Résumé (10-15 lignes) ;
Coin supérieur droit : indiquer la catégorie thématique (si la proposition ne correspond pas à l'une des principales catégories, utiliser 10).

Les auteurs dont la proposition sera acceptée recevront une feuille de style pour la préparation de la version finale (et électronique) qui sera publiée dans les Actes immédiatement avant le congrès. Les articles issus de communications orales auront jusqu'à 10 pages et ceux issus des démonstrations de logiciels environ 5 pages, dans une section différente des Actes.

Dates importantes

30 Octobre 2003: date limite pour l'envoi aux organisateurs des versions préliminaires des articles.
1er février 2004: envoi de l'acceptation ou du refus de la proposition.
15 mars 2004: date limite pour l'envoi des articles prêts à la reproduction pour la publication des Actes.

Ateliers d'avant-congrès

Des ateliers d'avant-congrès seront organisés. Les thèmes seront annoncés plus tard.

Expositions

Une exposition de livres et de logiciels sera organisée pendant les pauses-café lors du congrès. Il est possible de faire librement, pour ceux dont la proposition n'a pas été acceptée, des démonstrations de logiciels. Mais il leur faudra prévoir leur propre PC ou ordinateur portable car ils ne recevront pas d'assistance technique.

Inscription

Les frais d'inscription seront annoncés plus tard. Les membres d'EURALEX ainsi que ceux s'inscrivant avant la date limite bénéficieront d'un tarif privilégié. Pour les autres, les frais seront plus élevés.

Logement

L'organisation du logement se fera directement par l'Office du Tourisme de Lorient dans des hôtels du centre-ville et aussi dans des chambres bon marché.
