This quarterly Newsletter is intended to include not only official announcements but also news about EURALEX members, their publications, projects, and (it is hoped) their opinions, and news about other lexicographical organizations. The deadlines for winter (December), spring (March), summer (June), and autumn (September) issues are respectively 1 August, 25 October, 1 February, and 1 May annually.

You managed to reconcile and cover every aspect of lexicography and lexicology and, thanks to you, EURALEX members and IJL readers undoubtedly got their money's worth out of the journal, whether they be lexicographers, dictionary users, lexicologists, language teachers, lexical semanticists, or traditional or computational linguists. We'll all miss your professionalism, your openness, your expert advice, your judicious comments, your vision, your unflagging and contagious enthusiasm ... and your sense of humour. I would also like to welcome Paul Bogaards both as the new editor of IJL and as a member of our Executive Board. Paul, your various contributions to IJL, to EURALEX congresses and to other journals and books have shown how insightful and intelligent your research could be. I would also like to avail myself of the opportunity to thank Rosemary Sansome, who gave up her review editorship in December 2001. In an earlier issue of this journal, Tony Cowie had already praised her "contribution to the smooth running and scholarly reputation of IJL" and this issue provides me with a great opportunity to extend to her EURALEX'S warmest thanks for her formidable job. The reviews editorship will be taken over by Sylvie De Cock, who will put her passion for dictionaries to good use and will make sure new publications in our exciting field get the feedback they deserve in this journal. Minutes of the General Assembly held in August 2000
The minutes had been published in IJL 14/1 (March 2001). The minutes were approved as published. There were no matters arising.
President's Report
The president of EURALEX and the Board thanked the Copenhagen congress organizers for their excellent work and for the wonderful conference.
As Tony Cowie will stop his activities as Editor of the IJL by the end of 2002, the president and the Board expressed their gratitude towards Tony Cowie for all the work he had put into the journal (see also below).
Martin Gellerstam will cease to be a member of the Board; the president thanked him for serving on the Board.
EURALEX has given its second lifetime honorary membership (the first lifetime honorary member is Reinhard R.K. Hartmann) to Beryl T. Sue Atkins. The president and the Board thanked Sue Atkins for all she has done for lexicography.
EURALEX has received GBP £2500 from the Hornby Trust; the president expressed the gratitude of EURALEX and of its Board; a Hornby lecture will be made possible, among other things, through this financial contribution.
By way of moral sponsorship, EURALEX allows the use of its name under certain conditions; such sponsorship has no financial implications. Institutions planning events in lexicography and seeking EURALEX moral sponsorship should contact the association's secretary.
Treasurer's Report
The accounts of the association are in reasonable shape and similar to the situation at the end of 2001. The association has made a slight loss in 2001. The production of the Festschrift for B.T.S. Atkins was one of the main items of expenditure in the past exercise.
The accounts have been audited and an auditors' report is available.
Membership is stable; EURALEX has currently 22 IFF members (sponsored by EURALEX via the International Friendship Fund, IFF); one of these is likely to be discontinued, a few others may be added. The EURALEX membership is encouraged to donate to the IFF.
The Treasurer's report was approved.
International Journal of Lexicography (IJL)
Tony Cowie presented his last report on the IJL. After five years of editorship, he will hand over, by the beginning of 2003, to Paul Bogaards (Leiden).
The issues for 2003 are well under way: dictionary use, computational aspects and lexicography in France are the prominent topics of current and upcoming issues.
Awards
EURALEX is happy to see several proposals for Awards for lexicographic work; the Board should like to thank all those offering financial means to support lexicography in this way:
The Laurence Urdang Award (LUA):
In the 2001 exercise, 5 proposals (total amount requested: ca.
GBP £6000) have been submitted, two of which received funding:
As some money is left over from the 2001 exercise, a larger amount is available under the 2002 Award. Proposals should be submitted to the Assistant Secretary-Treasurer of the association, Ulrich Heid, by October 30th, 2002.
Kernerman Dictionary Research Grant:
Lionel Kernerman has offered a grant for dictionary research, which
will be administered also by EURALEX; the same Jury will judge
applications as for the Urdang Award; applications should also be sent to
Heid, by October 30th, 2002.
CJK Dictionary Institute Award:
Jack Halpern proposed to
set up another award (details to be publicized via the EURALEX
website and mailing list); the proposal was made that different
companies should contribute to a EURALEX-administered award for
lexicographic work.
Membership Fees
Due to a decrease in the production cost for IJL, Oxford University Press were able to charge EURALEX less than before for the IJL. This allowed EURALEX to propose to its members that the membership fees remain unchanged (GBP £37 for individuals, GBP £68.50 for institutions). Due to the lower charges from OUP, EURALEX could slightly increase its share of each membership fee.
This proposal was accepted by the General Assembly.
EURALEX Congress in 2004
The eleventh EURALEX International Congress will be held in the first half of July 2004 in Lorient, France. The organizer is Geoffrey Williams from Université de Bretagne Sud in Lorient. Details about the congress will appear on the EURALEX web site and in the EURALEX newsletter.
Proposal for the EURALEX Congress in 2006
Florence, Italy has proposed to host the EURALEX congress in 2006; the organization will take place in cooperation with board member Carla Marello, of Torino, Italy.

Ulrich Heid
EURALEX Assistant Secretary-Treasurer and Minutes Secretary
Applications are invited for the Laurence Urdang Award (formerly the Verbatim Award), which is funded by Laurence Urdang and administered by EURALEX. Its purpose is to support unpaid lexicographical work of any type, including study. The amount available is GBP £1500 sterling, and an individual award may vary in size from GBP £250 to the full amount. Applications must be received by 30 September 2003. Results will be announced by early 2004, and awards will be presented as soon as possible after the notification of results.
Applications should take the form of:
1. a letter specifying the amount applied for;
2. a statement giving full details of the purpose to which the funds
would be put, and an indication of expected tangible results (e.g.
publications);
3. a curriculum vitae including qualifications, details of previous
lexicographical or related work, and publications;
4. one professional or academic reference;
5. details of funding received or applied for in relation to the
project for which the Laurence Urdang Award is being sought.

The Selection Panel consists of the EURALEX President, and two past presidents. The Award is open to EURALEX members only, but applications will be accepted from people who have applied for EURALEX membership and are awaiting confirmation of this. For information: the deadline for the submission of preliminary versions of papers (6-8 pages) is likely to be 30 October 2003. Topics are likely to be broadly similar to those covered at previous congresses.

The Dictionary Research Centre and the Centre for Corpus Linguistics (Department of English) at the University of Birmingham, UK, will be running the following courses in September 2003:

The courses are independent and can be taken separately, but they are also designed so that anyone who wants to take both can do so. Courses will include both practice and theory, and they will be taught mainly by University of Birmingham staff. Work began in January 2002 on re-editing the A-B section of the Dictionary, first edited in a very concise manner in the 1950s, and the first draft of this work is now available online at http://www.wales.ac.uk/dictionary/gpc_pdfs.htm.
