Applications are invited for the Laurence Urdang Award (formerly the Verbatim Award), which is funded by Laurence Urdang and administered by EURALEX. Its purpose is to support unpaid lexicographical work of any type, including study. The amount available is GBP £1500 sterling, and an individual award may vary in size from GBP £250 to the full amount. Applications must be received by 30 September 2000. Results will be announced by early 2001, and awards will be presented as soon as possible after the notification of results.

The fourth International Symposium on Phraseology (ISP 4) will be held at the Department of Linguistics of the University of Roma Tre, April 9-11, 2001.
Following the symposia held in Leeds, Moscow and Stuttgart, ISP 4 will bring
together again all those interested in multiword units.
Papers on all aspects of phraseology are invited, but the main themes of
the Symposium will concern cross-cultural and typological issues.
Suggested topics will include (among others):
Demonstrations are welcome: proposers are invited to communicate their requirements to the organizers.
The scientific committee includes: Anthony P. Cowie (Leeds); Thierry Fontenelle (Luxembourg); Ulrich Heid (Stuttgart); Carla Marello (Turin); Ludmila Minaeva (Moscow); Rosamund Moon (Birmingham); and Stefania Nuccorini (Rome). The local organizing committee includes: Patrick Boylan; Elizabeth Glass; David Hart; Stefania Nuccorini; and Pina Pagliai.
There will be 20-23 papers (30 minutes each, including discussion). The organizers would like to make all abstracts (and even final versions) available electronically on the Department of Linguistics web site before the Symposium. Participants should arrive having read the papers that they are interested in. This will allow presenters to limit their talks to a few general remarks and to use most of their half hour for discussion. (Photocopies of abstracts will be distributed at the Symposium to those participants who do not have access to the internet.)
Capacity is limited to 40-50 participants (on a first-come basis). Participants' fee: 60-70 Euros. Easter is high season in Rome: hotel prices ranging from 70-80 to 150-200 Euros will be negotiated. Details will be communicated to those who send in the pre-registration form.

After a gap of 16 years, the setting up of a new committee with Professor Tamás Magay as chairman and Zsuzsanna Fábián, PhD, as secretary, happened because it was realized that there was a need to enhance lexicographical work and studies in general, and to `monitor' various dictionary projects in particular, in order to raise the standard of lexicographical works and to fight dilettantism in this field.
By way of background explanation, we have to take note of the fact that the change of regime in Hungary, starting in 1990 after the collapse of communist dictatorship, has led to the introduction of a market economy and pluralism in every sphere of life. The monopolistic situation where there was only one dictionary publisher (Akadémiai Kiadó) has ceased: other publishers have emerged and are fighting for their right to join in the dictionary `market'.
One of the chief activities of the Committee will be to bring an adequate dictionary criticism into being, as well as weeding out what is unwanted in dictionary writing.

The 4th International Afrilex Conference was held from 5 to 6 July 1999. A variety of lexicographical topics received attention. Keynotes were presented by A.C. Nkabinde (`Some hints on the compilation of a monolingual dictionary in a Bantu language with special reference to Zulu') and by G.-M. de Schryver, Belgium (`The compilation of dictionaries for African languages and the concept of Simultaneous Feedback').
The newly elected Executive consists of D.J. Prinsloo (Chairperson), A.C. Nkabinde (Vice-chairperson), M. Alberts (Secretary), K.J. Mashamaite (Treasurer) and B. Schulz (Organizer).
The 5th International Conference of Afrilex will be held from 3-5 July 2000 in Stellenbosch. Prof. Rufus Gouws is the local organizer. Keynotes will be read by Sven Tarp (Denmark) and Kathy Kavanagh. The conference theme is `Dictionaries for Special Purposes' but papers on other aspects of lexicography will also be presented. The first day of the conference will form a workshop focusing on dictionaries treating languages for special purposes. The second and third day will host the traditional conference programme.

The Urdang-DSNA Award for 2000 was given to Arienne Dwyer for her project `A Salar-English Corpus-Based Dictionary Database'. Salar is an unwritten Turkic language spoken in northwestern China. There are only about 90,000 Salars, about one third of whom still speak the language. Ms. Dwyer has been working with them for the last decade, making digital field recordings of a variety of oral genres as well as still and video images. She hopes to enter her material into a Unicode-compatible relational database which will be the basis for a dictionary. Most recently she has been at Johannes Gutenburg University in Mainz but plans to return to the U.S.
The 2001 meeting of the DSNA will be held at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, from May 6-9.

In 1993 the Delegates of Oxford University Press commissioned a comprehensive revision and updating of the Dictionary, and a staff of around eighty scholars and research assistants has been assembled to bring the OED up to date. Many other scholars throughout the world are assisting in the project by giving detailed advice on the vocabulary of their own specialisms.
There are numerous reasons why this revision is needed. Clearly the factual content of many entries is in need of updating, especially in areas such as science and technology; geographical and political boundaries referred to in definitions have changed; a wealth of linguistic scholarship, especially in areas such as etymology, has been published, and needs to be taken account of; many more texts, especially in the early modern period, have become available; other historical and regional dictionaries have appeared, the findings of which need incorporating; and the OED files have collected a huge store of antedatings which will change our view of the semantic development of many terms.
Realizing that, with the advent of the World Wide Web, it was not necessary to make readers wait until completion of the work before making it available, OUP took the decision to publish online, on a subscription basis. In March of this year, OED Online was launched, containing the whole of the Second Edition, the Additions volumes, and the first batch of draft revised and new entries. This will be added to every quarter, so that the academic communuity can benefit from the research as it progresses and eventually cumulates into a new edition.
Newly revised drafts will be linked to the OED2 versions of the entries, so that the changes can themselves be studied. This was felt to be important, as the OED is perceived as having cultural and historical value in it own right, and so it was important that the revision did not obliterate the earlier state of the entries. The format in which entries are presented means that not only is there the full range of versatile text searching which you would expect from an electronic product, but that the development of the Dictionary itself can be followed. It is also hoped that feedback from expert readers will result in improvements and antedatings which can be incorporated into re-released versions of entries, so that the revision process remains fluid and in effect becomes continuous.
It remains to be seen where the concept of an edition will end up in this new online universe; but for the time being it is reassuring to think that Sir James Murray would probably not have any difficulty in recognizing quarterly online updates as a new incarnation of the fascicles in which the original OED was issued. And after all, he did get Caught in the Web of Words.....

Designed for intermediate to advanced ESL/EFL students of American English, it is based on 100 million words of American English in the Cambridge International Corpus. Definitions are written using a controlled 2,000-word vocabulary. (ISBN 0-521-47761-1). Also available with CD-ROM (ISBN 0-521-77974-X): the CD-ROM works on Macintosh and PC platforms, contains spoken pronunciations of all entry words, can be annotated by the user, and is fully indexed to allow searches by parts of speech, grammar codes, and usage labels; the PC software also allows searches in parts of entries (headwords, runons, definitions, examples, idioms, etc), can be linked to Microsoft Word, and has an Internet button that puts a search word into any of several popular search engines (AltaVista, Yahoo, etc).
Danko Sipka (2000) A Bibliography of Serbo-Croatian Dictionaries: Serbian, Croatian, and Bosnian Muslim. This bibliography of Serbo-Croatian dictionaries encompasses over 2,500 dictionaries from the beginning of this lexicographic tradition in the 15th century until the end of the year of 1999. The material for the bibliography has been collected both from the Serbo-Croatian speaking area and from several major libraries in Germany, Poland, and the United States. The bibliography is segmented into monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual dictionaries, and each section is articulated further according to the subject-matter and languages involved. The bibliography contains subject, language, and author index. All section headings as well as the introduction are in English.
